I couple of months ago, I decided I would like to have a 27” iMac. I had been using my laptop Hackintosh as my primary computer for several years and decided I would like to have a desktop computer with a large screen. Since I was happy with OS X, I decided to look at getting a 27 inch iMac. I did not want to spring the money for a new one, so I started looking online. After several weeks of checking, I found a late 2009 27” iMac on Craigslist. It was the 2.8GHz quad-core i7 model, with 16GB of RAM, 2TB hard drive and the ATI HD4850 graphics card. Yes, this computer is 5 years old, but the price was right, $600! That included a wireless keyboard and magic trackpad, which I sold for $50 and replaced with an older full-size Apple USB Keyboard and a nice gaming mouse.
The iMac came with a fresh install of OS X Yosemite. The screen is amazing and the iMac is actually quite fast. The screen real estate is fantastic. I can view documents in full while having full view of websites. It is great when using x-Code and watching tutorials at the same time. I have no problem keeping twenty plus tabs open in Chrome, running Windows 7 via Parallels, Photoshop and several other programs at once. I can even play World of Warcraft at 2560 X 1440 resolution at over 50FPS (I have not played in a dungeon or raid yet).
The iMac could use a faster hard drive or an SSD. Waking up takes about 30 seconds. I am assuming that is from the hard drive. I am currently debating on whether to get a 1TB SSD or Seagate’s 4TB Hybrid Drive. If I upgrade the drive I will post a tutorial on how I did it and the results of the upgrade.
So if you are looking for a an iMac, considering buying a used one.
